Sustainable Ocean, Empowered Community
Segara Lestari Lovina is a community-driven movement that aims to preserve the rich biodiversity in Lovina Beach by combating plastic pollution.

The Challenge of Plastic Pollution to Coastal Biodiversity
Buleleng Regency is a small town located on the north coast of Bali Island, which has the longest coastline of 157.05 kilometers. Lovina Beach, one of the famous beaches in north Bali serves as a vital habitat for endangered dolphins and a rich ecosystem of diverse fish species and coral reefs. However, this unique biodiversity is under severe threat due to the escalating problem of plastic pollution.
The increased popularity of Lovina Beach as a tourism destination has led to a significant surge in plastic waste, originating from tourists, the increase of local accommodations, and the waste carried downstream by neighboring rivers. This unchecked pollution poses a direct and immediate danger to Lovina’s iconic dolphin population, as well as the fragile coral reef ecosystems and the diverse fish ecosystem that depend on them.
The consequences of this plastic pollution extend beyond ecological damage. The degradation of Lovina Beach’s natural beauty and the documented harm to its marine inhabitants are deterring tourists, resulting in a substantial negative impact on the local economy, which relies heavily on sustainable tourism. Furthermore, the community lacks the resources and capacity to implement a comprehensive waste management solution.
Therefore, the urgent implementation of a community-driven plastic-free movement in Lovina Beach is crucial. This initiative will not only safeguard the delicate marine ecosystem and its biodiversity but also ensure the long-term viability of green tourism and support a sustainable green economy for the local communities. Addressing this challenge is not merely an environmental imperative, but also an economic necessity for the future of Lovina Beach.
Our Unique Collaborative Approach between Community Empowerment and Local Wisdom
This project directly addresses the interconnected challenges of biodiversity loss and plastic pollution in Lovina Beach. This movement will be realized through several sub-activities, namely:
- Collaborative Stakeholder Forum (Focus Group Discussion): Uniting diverse stakeholders from tourism businesses and enterprises, the Lovina village community, and local government. This forum aims to address plastic pollution issues in Lovina Beach, a biodiversity-rich coastal area, stakeholders’ roles and mapping, and establish customary regulations (Awig-Awig), fostering collective action.
- Capacity Building Workshops: Four interactive sessions empowering community members with knowledge and skills to combat plastic’s impact on ecosystems and promote sustainable tourism. This capacity-building workshop series will be held each month that covering the topic of understanding plastic pollution and its impact on marine life, community-led waste management, biodiversity monitoring, and sustainable tourism practices. This workshop is arranged for a targeted group, including hotel and restaurant owners, small enterprises, the dolphin tourism group, the women’s group, and the youth group.
- Regular Community Beach Clean-Ups: We will organize monthly community beach clean-up events, involving volunteers from all stakeholder groups. During the project’s period, a minimum of three clean-ups will be conducted. Furthermore, we will work with the local customary village to solidify these clean-ups as a permanent, community-led initiative through the establishment of Awig-Awig, ensuring long-term sustainability. The collected plastic waste data will be used to monitor the effectiveness of the clean-ups.
- Plastic Waste Data Collection & Microplastic Assessment: During each beach clean-up, we will parallelly document the types and quantities of plastic waste collected, creating a comprehensive database for analysis. This data will be used to evaluate the sources of pollution and inform targeted interventions. Furthermore, we will collect water samples from strategic locations along Lovina Beach to assess microplastic contamination levels. These samples will be analyzed to determine the potential risks to Lovina’s marine biodiversity, and the findings will be shared with the community and relevant authorities.
- Biodiversity Monitoring: Training volunteers from the representative of local communities to document key species, creating educational materials on Lovina’s biodiversity and plastic threats. The biodiversity monitoring data will be incorporated into the Digital Environmental Guide and help visitors and tourists understand the richness of the Lovina Beach as a coastal ecosystem. This data is crucial for educational material for targeted intervention.
- Digital Environmental Guide: Developing a mobile-accessible guide integrating pollution data, biodiversity results, and Awig-Awig, educating tourists on responsible practices. This Digital Environmental Guide will be in the form of a QR Code that is easy to scan and will be placed in the vital tourist area in Lovina Beach.
